It is not always easy to shine as lights amid those who are living in sin. When this becomes difficult, it helps to look to the examples we read of in the word of God. One man that certainly stood out as a light in his generation was Noah. During his days the earth was filled with great corruption. The very thoughts of men were on evil continually (Genesis 6:5). The evilness of man had reached the point where God was sorry that He made man. However, Noah found grace in the eyes of God (vs. 8)

If we are to stand out in our generation as beacons of light, then we would do well by looking back to Noah’s great example. How was he able to be a light of godliness and truth in his generation? Let us consider two important factors.

Noah was moved with Godly Fear.

Jesus talks about proper fear by saying, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28).

Noah did not fear the multitude of evil men in his culture. Instead, he was moved with a godly fear and built the ark. Because Noah’s fear was properly placed in God, he did not consider the mockery or rejection of his generation. He simply did all that God commanded him to do. He prepared the ark to God’s specifications, and he preached to the people (2 Peter 2:5).

Today, we must not fear what others do or say against godliness. Instead, we must be like Noah and be bold in the face of adversity. We must complete the tasks that God has put before us. We do this by using our talents, abilities, and opportunities to glorify God.

Noah was moved with Solid Faith.

Noah demonstrated his great faith in God through obedience in building the ark. He never questioned God’s design but built the ark to His specifications. Noah also demonstrated great faith in God by being firm in his conviction that a global flood was coming. His generation could mock him and go about their lives as if Noah was out of his mind. Noah, however, remained firm. As a result, he and his family survived the flood, while the disbelievers perished.

Today, we also must remain solid in our convictions. The world would have us to believe that our faith in God and the way we conduct our lives is foolishness. However, like Noah, we know better. We see destruction coming. In 2 Peter chapter 3 Peter tells us that this world and all its works will be burned up. When we are moved with godly fear and faith in the Almighty, we know that we are on the right side of eternity! We too can be steadfast like Noah!

God Bless each of you,
