I remember the first time I tried to solve the Rubic Cube. My first idea was to solve one color, and the rest would fall into place automatically. This theory was quickly disproven. Instead, solving the cube requires formulas that enable you to work on the layers without misaligning the work you have already completed.

My first theory on solving the cube certainly seems foolish now. The question I want to raise is what about our salvation? Are there people who examine the Scriptures, find a few verses that pertain to salvation, and walk away believing that is all there is to it?

Many believe that man is saved by faith only. Of course, we do not underestimate the value of faith as it pertains to our salvation. Jesus said, “Therefore, I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

There is no doubt that faith in God is absolutely essential to salvation. In fact, when one searches through the Scriptures, he will find examples of those who pleased God and those who failed to do so. The key difference was their faith or lack thereof.

What about faith only? The truth is that true genuine faith is never alone. When one has faith in something, his faith is naturally going to cause him to react in some way. If I were to say that I have faith in God, but I do not keep His commandments, one could rightly question whether or not I truly believe.

Our faith in God naturally leads us to repentance. Jesus said, “…but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:5) Jesus teaches that faith without repentance will cause one to be eternally lost. Therefore, one is not saved by faith alone. He must also repent.

When one has faith in God, it naturally leads them to confessing His name before men. Paul wrote, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9) This verse clearly indicates that there is more to salvation than just faith only.

True faith in God also will naturally lead one to obedience. Jesus gave the command, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16). Within this verse Jesus mentioned the necessity of faith, but not faith by itself. Faith and obedience go hand in hand.

We all certainly know that the Rubic Cube is not solved by merely aligning one side. Likewise, we cannot be saved by merely obeying one of God’s commandments. We must be obedient to all that God has commanded us to do. Remember the words of Christ who said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

God Bless each of you,
