We invite you and your family to join us for worship services and Bible study. Here at the Hiawatha church of Christ you will find a loving group of Christians who love and care about your soul. When you come into our services, we want you to feel comfortable. Listed below are some things that you can expect when you visit. If you have any questions, you can email us at [email protected] or call 785-741-4023.

Our History

We are a part of the Restoration Movement. Our goal is to restore the church to the pattern set forth in the New Testament. We accomplish this by looking in the word of God speaking where the Bible speaks and being silent where the Bible is silent (Deuteronomy 4:2; Revelation 22:18-19). Everything that we do in our worship service and in our daily Christian lives is built on the authority of Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 3:17).

Our Singing

Our worship service to God is without the aid of any mechanical instruments. This is not based upon personal preference, but upon the pattern that has been revealed to us in the word of God. We have been commanded to sing and to make melody in our hearts (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). Even secular history of the New Testament church reveals that their services were singing only. Therefore, in our efforts to restore the New Testament church, we follow the pattern set forth.

Prayer

Several times during our worship service to God, the congregation will be lead in prayer by one of our brothers in Christ. During this time the congregation will bow their heads and follow along silently as our thanks to God is being expressed and His continual strength and guidance is being requested.

Preaching

Our minister does not carry any particular title such as, “Revered” or “Pastor”. He is simply referred to as the preacher or the minister of the congregation. The sermons typically last between twenty-five and thirty minutes and are based solely upon biblical teaching.

Invitation

At the conclusion of every sermon, an invitation is extended to anyone in the assembly to respond. Those who are non-Christian may come forward and become a Christian by being immersed into Christ through baptism for the remission of their sins. Christians may also respond to the invitation if they need to be restored or to ask for prayers of the congregation. Responding to the invitation is purely voluntary. If you desire to be baptized for the remission of sins or need prayer, you can make your request known at the conclusion of the service also.

The Lord's Supper

The Lord’s Supper is prepared every week which is in accordance with the pattern of the New Testament church (Acts 20:7). This is the time when Christians reverently remember the sacrifice Jesus our Lord has made for us upon the cross of Calvary.

Contribution

Every Sunday a collection is taken in accordance with the pattern we read of in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). This is a free-will offering made by the members of the congregation to support the local work of the church.
