There is an ongoing debate over baptism’s role in salvation. Basically, there are two views about baptism. One is that it is essential for salvation and the other is that baptism takes place after one is saved.
Any time controversy over a biblical doctrine exists, it is always best to examine the Scriptures to ascertain the truth. In this article we will examine several scriptures that pertain to baptism’s role in our salvation.
Baptism is a command of Christ.
Jesus told His disciples to go and preach the gospel to every creature. He said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:16). Baptism was not a suggestion of Christ. Instead, Jesus placed baptism between faith and salvation. It is therefore only after one believes and has obeyed the command of Christ to be baptized that one will be saved.
Baptism is a cleansing.
Paul was told by our Lord to go into the city of Damascus, and he would be instructed on what he must do for salvation. Ananias came to him and said, “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 22:16). Ananias made it clear that through baptism our sins are washed away. Therefore, baptism is a cleansing of our soul. Prior to baptism, we are still lost in our sins.
Peter also stated, “There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:21). Baptism is not a cleansing of the flesh, but rather a cleansing of the soul. It is this cleansing that now saves us from our sins. This salvation occurs after our obedience unto God.
Baptism is our way into the church.
Paul wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Every spiritual blessing from God is found only in Christ. Specifically, the blessing of salvation is found in Christ. “Therefore, I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (2 Timothy 2:10).
The way we put on Christ is through baptism. Note again the words of Paul, “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” (Galatians 3:27) One is not saved prior to putting on Christ. One is not saved prior to having their sins washed away. Therefore, the final step we take for our salvation is baptism for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38).
